Coming Into His Presence and Casting Our Burdens
Purpose
This process is for people who are overwhelmed, weary, anxious, heavy-hearted, or carrying burdens they were never meant to carry alone.
The goal is not to pretend life is easy. The goal is to bring the full weight of life honestly before the Lord, come to Jesus, cast our burdens on Him, and learn to walk forward under His care.
This requires action on our part.
We come.
We name the burden.
We cast it on the Lord.
We humble ourselves under His mighty hand.
We receive His care.
We walk forward in obedience.
This is not a technique to make pain disappear. This is a biblical act of surrender that places our burdens in the hands of the One who sustains us.
Some burdens may lift immediately. Others may require repeated casting, wise counsel, repentance, boundaries, forgiveness, or ongoing care. But either way, the command remains true:
Cast your burden on the Lord because He cares for you and He will sustain you.
Guardrails for This Process
Before we begin, we need to be clear about what this process is and what it is not.
1. Scripture Is the Foundation
The songs are worship responses, not the foundation. The foundation is the Word of God.
The authority is not our emotions, not the music, and not the picture in our minds. The authority is Scripture.
We are not trying to manufacture an experience. We are submitting our hearts, minds, burdens, and fears to the truth of God’s Word.
2. This Is Not a Quick Fix
This is not a technique to make pain disappear.
Some burdens lift quickly. Others must be cast again and again as we learn to trust the Lord.
Repeated casting is not failure. It is discipleship.
The Lord is patient with His children. When we realize we have picked the burden back up, we cast it again.
3. Surrender Does Not Mean Silence
Casting your burden on the Lord does not mean ignoring danger, staying in abuse, refusing wise counsel, or avoiding necessary help.
Sometimes the next obedient step is telling the truth, calling for help, involving church leadership, seeking biblical counsel, speaking with a doctor, or getting to safety.
Surrender is not denial. Surrender is placing the burden in God’s hands and obeying Him with the next faithful step.
4. Anxiety Needs Careful Shepherding
Sometimes anxiety reveals that we are trying to carry what belongs to God.
Sometimes anxiety is connected to grief, trauma, exhaustion, illness, chronic stress, spiritual warfare, or deep wounds.
Jesus does not shame the weary. He invites them to come, and He teaches them to walk with Him.
This process should be handled with gentleness, truth, and wisdom.
1. Enter His Presence
Scripture: Psalm 91:1–13
Song: “Your Presence” by Chroma Worship
Begin by slowly reading Psalm 91:1–13.
Do not rush. Let the truth of the passage establish the room.
God is our shelter.
God is our shadow. God is our refuge.
God is our fortress.
God is the One who delivers, covers, guards, and holds His people.
Psalm 91 begins:
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”
— Psalm 91:1
Before we deal with what is overwhelming us, we remember where we are.
We are not alone.
We are not abandoned.
We are not standing in emptiness.
We are standing before the Most High.
Psalm 91 does not mean God’s people will never suffer. It means God is our refuge in suffering, our protector in battle, and our faithful keeper in every trial.
Key Truth:
Before we cast our burdens, we enter His presence.
Worship Response
As this song plays, do not rush to solve anything. Let the Lord remind your soul that His presence is your refuge.
Let Psalm 91 become personal:
Lord, You are my shelter.
Lord, You are my refuge.
Lord, You are my fortress.
Lord, I trust You.
Prayer
Father, I come under the shelter of the Most High. I choose to abide in the shadow of the Almighty. You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. Before I talk about what is overwhelming me, I remember who You are. I enter Your presence not because I am strong, but because You are faithful.
2. Name the Burden
Scripture: Psalm 5:1–3
Now invite people to honestly name what they are carrying.
This is not a time to clean it up, minimize it, excuse it, or pretend it is not heavy.
God already knows.
Jesus already sees.
The Holy Spirit already understands.
Psalm 5 gives people permission to bring their groaning, cries, and prayers before the Lord.
Read aloud:
“Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.”
— Psalm 5:1–3
David does not hide his groaning from God. He brings it to Him.
He brings his groaning.
He brings his cry.
He brings his prayer.
Then he watches.
That is what we are doing here. We are not pretending the burden is small. We are bringing the real weight of it before the King.
Prompt: Pray Through the Feeling
Identify the main feeling connected to their overwhelm.
Lord, I feel overwhelmed by ____________________.
Lord, my groaning sounds like ____________________.
Lord, my cry before You is ____________________.
This may be:
Fear
Grief
Conflict
Exhaustion
Responsibility
Regret
Uncertainty
Anger
Pressure
Loneliness
Confusion
Disappointment
A person I cannot change
An outcome I cannot control
A future I cannot predict
A wound I cannot seem to get past
Pray Psalm 5:1–3 Personally
Give a few minutes to pray through Psalm 5:1–3 in your own words.
Lord, give ear to my words.
Help me tell You the truth about what I am carrying.
Lord, consider my groaning.
You know the pain beneath the words. You know what I cannot fully explain.
Lord, give attention to the sound of my cry.
I am not performing. I am crying out to You as my King and my God.
For to You do I pray.
I am bringing this to You, not hiding it, not carrying it alone, not pretending I am fine.
In the morning You hear my voice.
You are not distant. You hear me when I call.
I prepare my prayer and watch.
I place this before You, and I wait with trust.
Reflection Questions
What have I been carrying that is crushing me?
What feeling have I been afraid to admit to God?
What groaning have I tried to silence?
What cry have I been holding back?
What fear keeps replaying in my mind?
What responsibility have I picked up that belongs to God?
What am I trying to control?
What burden have I been afraid to name?
Prayer
Lord, give ear to my words and consider my groaning. I bring into Your presence the thing I have been carrying. I will not hide it, excuse it, or pretend it is not heavy. You are my King and my God, and to You I pray. Hear my voice. Receive my cry. Help me place this before You and watch in faith.
3. Remember the Lord Is Your Deliverer
Scripture: Psalm 18:1–3, 16–19
Song: “Psalm 18” by Ayanda Khumalo & The Shoshbin
After the burden is named, people need to remember who they are bringing it to.
They are not bringing their burden to a weak Savior.
They are not casting it into the air.
They are bringing it to the Lord, their rock, fortress, deliverer, refuge, shield, and stronghold.
Read aloud:
“I love you, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer…”
— Psalm 18:1–2
Then read:
“He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He rescued me from my strong enemy… He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.”
— Psalm 18:16–19
Key Truth:
The burden may be real, but the Lord is stronger.
Worship Response
As this song plays, remember who you are giving your burden to. He is your rock, your fortress, your deliverer, your refuge, and your strength.
Let your heart declare:
The Lord is my rock.
The Lord is my fortress.
The Lord is my deliverer.
The Lord is my strength.
Prayer
Lord, You are not weak. You are not distant. You are not unaware. You are my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. I bring You what is too heavy for me because nothing is too heavy for You.
4. Cast the Burden on the Lord
Scripture: Psalm 55:22
Song: “Lean Back” by Capital City Music
Read aloud:
“Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.”
— Psalm 55:22
This is the action step.
We do not just think about surrender.
We do not merely talk about surrender.
We actively give the burden to Him.
To cast means to release the weight from our hands and place it into His. It is an act of faith. It is saying:
“Lord, I am done pretending I am strong enough to carry what only You can sustain.”
Prayerful Reflection
This reflection is not the authority. The Word of God is the authority.
This is not a mystical exercise. This is prayerful reflection under the authority of Scripture.
We are using our imagination the way Scripture calls us to remember, consider, behold, and meditate on truth.
We are not trying to manufacture an emotional experience. We are using prayerful imagination submitted to Scripture to help us obey what God has already commanded.
Close your eyes and picture the burden in their hands.
Give it a name.
Do not excuse it.
Do not minimize it.
Do not pretend it is lighter than it is.
Now picture yourself walking to Jesus and placing it at His feet.
Say quietly or out loud:
Lord, this burden is Yours. I cannot carry it anymore.
Now open your hands as a sign of surrender.
Hold them open before the Lord.
Worship Response
As this song plays, resist the temptation to pick the burden back up. And when you realize you have picked it up again, cast it again.
The Father is patient with His children.
Lean back into the care of the Father.
Let your soul remember that you are not abandoned, forgotten, or alone.
The Lord does not merely take the burden; He sustains the one who casts it.
Prayer
Father, I cast this burden on You. I release what I cannot control, what I cannot fix, and what I was never meant to carry alone. Teach me to lean back into Your care instead of leaning on my own strength. I trust You to sustain me. I trust You with the outcome. I trust You with my heart.
5. Come to Jesus and Receive His Rest
Scripture: Matthew 11:28–30
Read aloud:
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
Jesus does not shame the weary.
He invites them.
He does not say, “Try harder.”
He does not say, “Get yourself together first.”
He says, “Come to me.”
But coming is an action.
We must stop running to control, distraction, fear, anger, and isolation, and come to Christ.
Continue reading:
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart…”
— Matthew 11:29
Jesus does not only remove the crushing yoke; He gives us His yoke.
The goal is not just emotional relief.
The goal is learning to walk with Jesus.
Reflection Questions
What false yoke have I been wearing?
The yoke of fear?
The yoke of control?
The yoke of bitterness?
The yoke of people-pleasing?
The yoke of shame?
The yoke of trying to be God?
What would it look like to take the yoke of Jesus instead?
Prayer
Jesus, I come to You weary and heavy laden. I take Your yoke upon me. Teach me to walk with You. I lay down the yoke of fear, control, striving, anger, shame, and exhaustion. Give me the rest only You can give. Teach me Your way.
6. Humble Yourself Under His Mighty Hand
Scripture: 1 Peter 5:5–7
Read aloud:
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you…”
— 1 Peter 5:6
This step matters because anxiety often grows when we try to control what belongs to God.
We want to know everything.
Fix everything.
Manage every outcome.
Protect ourselves from every possible pain.
Carry people we were never meant to carry.
Sometimes what we call responsibility is actually control. Sometimes anxiety reveals that we are trying to carry what belongs to God. We need to be honest before the Lord, because He does not shame the weary, but He does call us to humble ourselves under His mighty hand.
Humility says:
God is God.
I am not.
His hand is mighty.
His timing is right. His care is real.
Then Peter says:
“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”
— 1 Peter 5:7
We cast our anxieties on Him because He cares for us.
Not because life is easy.
Not because the problem is small.
Not because we understand the outcome.
Because He cares.
Prayer
Father, I humble myself under Your mighty hand. Forgive me for trying to carry what You commanded me to cast. Forgive me for trying to control what belongs to You. I surrender the outcome, the timing, the people involved, and the things I cannot control. I cast my anxieties on You because You care for me.
7. Receive His Care
Now invite people to sit quietly with open hands.
This is not empty silence.
This is receiving truth.
The lie says: “I am alone.”
The truth says: “He cares for me.”
The lie says: “I have to carry this.”
The truth says: “Cast your burden on the Lord.”
The lie says: “If I let go, everything will fall apart.”
The truth says: “He will sustain me.”
The lie says: “God is distant.”
The truth says: “He is my refuge and fortress.”
Prompt:
With your hands open, pray slowly:
Jesus, I receive Your care.
Pause.
Jesus, I receive Your rest.
Pause.
Jesus, I trust You with this burden.
Pause.
8. Walk Forward in Obedience
This process should not end with emotion only.
Real surrender bears fruit.
Ask the Lord:
What is one thing I need to leave with Jesus?
What is one obedient step I need to take?
Who do I need to forgive?
Who do I need to call?
What do I need to confess?
Where do I need to ask for help?
What do I need to stop trying to control?
What truth do I need to rehearse this week?
Faith moves.
Burdens are cast.
Trust walks forward.
After this prayer, I may need someone to pray with me, help me discern next steps, or walk with me through ongoing care. I will not carry deep burdens alone. I will bring them into the light with mature believers who will handle them with wisdom and discretion.
Prayer
Lord, show me the next faithful step. I do not need to control the whole future. I need to obey You today. Give me courage to walk in truth, humility, forgiveness, and trust. Keep me from picking back up what I have placed at Your feet.
Closing Guided Prayer
Lord Jesus,
I come to You because You invited me to come. I am weary and heavy laden, and I need the rest only You can give.
I come under the shelter of the Most High. I abide in the shadow of the Almighty. You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.
Lord, give ear to my words and consider my groaning. I name the burden I have been carrying. I refuse to hide it, excuse it, or pretend it is not heavy.
You are my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. You are strong enough to carry what is crushing me.
I cast my burden on You because Your Word says You will sustain me. I give You what I cannot fix, what I cannot control, and what I cannot carry.
Father, I humble myself under Your mighty hand. I confess that I have tried to manage things that belong to You. I surrender my fear, my timing, my expectations, and my need to understand everything.
Holy Spirit, help me receive the care of God. Let the truth become louder than the anxiety. Let the promises of Scripture become stronger than the lies I have believed.
Jesus, I place this burden at Your feet. I leave it with You.
Teach me to walk in Your yoke, Your rest, and Your peace.
Amen.
Closing Declaration
I dwell in the shelter of the Most High.
The Lord is my refuge and my fortress.
The Lord hears my words and considers my groaning.
The Lord is my rock and my deliverer.
Jesus invites me to come.
I cast my burden on the Lord.
He will sustain me.
I humble myself under His mighty hand.
He cares for me.
When I pick the burden back up, I will cast it again.
I will walk forward in obedience and trust.
