Blocks, Speed Bumps & Barriers

For the past two weeks, my grandsons have been living at my House, and the House has been filled with a ton of block activity. It started with Lincoln and me during his brother's nap time using letter and number blocks. The goal was to keep him occupied and distracted. So we began stacking blocks on our end table. Before long, I had to stand because they got too high.

About a week later, I received a call from the boy's uncle, who explained that he was making a block set for all the grand kids using the 2x4s from Albert's work that had been used in shipping the spools of wire for the project they are working on. Albert had cut them all into squares, rectangles, and triangles, and each block was sanded and placed into a large plastic tote.

This addition to our home is very popular among all the grand kids. Houses have been made, balance beams have been walked on, and arguments have occurred. These blocks are a timeless toy that remains popular among children, regardless of the popularity of electronic toys. I love these precious times with my kids and grand kids.

When my life hits those unseen speed bumps, it is the Word I lean on. We have all been driving along a parking lot or residential neighborhood and didn't see the sign that said 'speed bump ahead,' and you end up going over them at 30 mph. That's when your body comes off the seat, almost hitting your head on the car's roof, and it leaves you surprised. You then realize you were likely daydreaming, but now you are fully awake. I know God puts some of those speed bumps in my life, and just like when I am driving, I miss the signs.

Then there are the barricades of life that are there for our protection. Barricades are often used in road work to keep us safe, but are temporary. Some barricades are permanent, usually made from concrete or stainless steel. These often separate sections of highway frequently experience head-on collisions. The road department will install them for our safety.

I see all three of these in scripture. Blocks are life scripture that help us build our houses on solid rock. Speed bumps that shake us up are reminders that we are in an area of life that is dangerous, and we better pay close attention. Then we have barriers like the 10 Commandments that are there for our protection because without them, we will all destroy our lives.

This Sunday, we are going a little further in the Transcendent Truth Series, and Paul is going to let the Corinthians know that they are being stumbling blocks to those in Corinth who do not believe in Jesus. These well-meaning followers of Jesus are becoming a barricade to those who do not know him because they are taking fellow believers to court. Join us on Sunday at 9:00 and 11:00 AM.

In Him,
Pastor Chris
